Yet another game lost to SOE?

SOE will buy out Flying Lab before its all said and done, I said that about Sigil too concerning Vanguard. It is SOE's normal operation and they aren't going to change.
This may or may not happen, but it should be noted that SOE bailed Sigil out with financial support after MS gave up on them. Sigil died because it was one of the worst-run development houses ever, not because of some nefarious plot by Smedley. If Flying Labs is as healthy as they claim, I don't see any reason to think PotBS will be bought out any time soon. I don't see this history of buying and ruining that you claim. They bought MxO, which would have died without them. They bought Vanguard, which never would have gone live without them. Still failing to see the evil.

My only real issue with SOE is the customer service. That alone makes me not want to play any game they are involved with.

Luckily for you, Flying Labs claims that they will be handling all the customer service, and running the servers. SOE is just distributing the game and doing marketing at this point.

You confuse evil and ineptitude.

If Flying Labs is so healthy, why would they want to outsource the publishing? There are a few rationales, but a low initial cost is the likely answer. SOE will own the whole thing eventually, just like Vanguard.

Now go blow up my houses dammit.

Healthy doesn't mean that they can maintain servers and perform publishing. They might have a healthy dev team alone. They can do a great game and gather a great community.

Wrong, the cost of publishing and hosting a game is nothing compared to developing. Esecially when they are about to gather subscribtion fees. I highly doubt we know the whole story. Not that I care its just something to speculate hehe, this being said I still wish them good luck, most of the dev team are cool guys and they worked hard for quite some time. Even tho I dont like their game anymore, I wish they dont fail.

What if the monies gathered for development were not enough to buy the equipment necessary to host and publish? Outsourcing is usually cheaper than doing complicated processes yourself.

QFE. With all due respect to Hakan, marketing, hosting and distribution are all massive undertakings. For a small dev house like FL, this would require a huge monetary investment that may be too much for a even a healthy business. Even with that, the chances of getting the game promoted and sold in as many places would be near zero.

SOE, on the other hand, will have the game promoted out the wazoo and have boxed copies in every EB, Gamestop, Walmart, and mom & pop. You can have the best game in the world, but if nobody knows about it you'll go broke trying to support it. Being in good financial health doesn't mean you have money to acquire space for hosting, administrators for servers, marketing staff, retail shelf space, packaging, advertising, etc.

Thought you were going to quote my other post :p

You mean the one about development money not being enough for promotion, hosting and distribution? Yeah, but I thought that was so blindingly obvious that a QFE would be silly.

Let's not go all crazy and admire SOE's advertising capability. Keep in mind many people didn't play SWG in the beginning because they didn't know the game existed. I think we can all agree SWGs marketing was dismal at best.

They have gotten better on selling a product without believing in it, and/or care for their customers. I think, all they think about is how they can shove it to you in the smooth way. And by the time you notice, is not their problem anymore. Is the customer's baby.

The perfect definition for a rape. ;)

I saw lots of adds for it before launch. Their mistake was in not reaching out to non-gamers. Anyway, SOE's marketing still beats the big nothing that Flying Labs has without them.

I saw ads about it everywhere too. But I was not much into games then. Mooby's fault.
