I'm done with MMO's

At least until Age of Conan comes out. WoW just bores the poop out of me, EQ2 as hard as I try, just can't get into it, I have no temptation to go back to SWG, so I'll stick to FPS' in the mean time.

AoC looks to be really good, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but until then I'm done with MMO's.

You're gonna be done with MMOs for a much longer time than AoC by the looks of things. If WoW bores the poop out of you, keep in mind that most MMOs will use WoW as a starting point in their development

And that's the sad thing. The structure that made few MMO's like SWG, DAoC, UO, and a few others have been destroyed.

yeah, kiss those skill based systems goodbye. an mmo struck a gold mine using a specific system. Rest assured all other developers and future developers will do everything in their power to use that financially successful product as Stage 1 on their drawing board

how unfortunatly true.

In my opinion SWG still had the best system(when it first came out). The profession system had so much potential, and although it is the hardest of all systems to balance, if it were balanced properly then it would destroy every other system out there.

QFE without a doubt. Guess being able to do what you want wasn't iconic enough. I also agree with Timi WoW was boring as poop.

i agree with Ker-ri agreeing with Timi

Thing is, WoW is only successful because of a few factors.

1) It's easy to get into and appeals to those that couldn't get into MMO's before

2) It has cartoony graphics that appeal to the kids

3) It has Blizzard on the box

There are several reasons why the game isn't that good

1) There's nothing to do outside of grinding (including PVP) and raiding

2) Once you hit 60 the game ends

3) I don't care what anyone says, adding raid "content" is not content

4) They are turning the game into Diablo online (see weapon and armor slots)

Everyone has stated how WoW has evolved MMO's. They really haven't "evolved" anything. They just improved an old system and streamlined it. If this had released back when EQ did, I would say without a doubt it's the best MMO, but they have done nothing revolutionary.

Games like DAoC, SWG, Saga of Ryzom, Anarchy online and a few others have tried to step outside of the box and be inventive, but WoW has managed to single handedly take any progress in MMO's and devolve it back into the stone ages, but only stream lined.

I see review sites of when WoW came out and everyone praised it, but if you read player reviews now, everyone is saying, "what was I thinking?". Hopefully some gaming companies will realize that WoW is nothing more then the Britney Spears of MMO's and keep trying to find ways of reinvinting the wheel. Even if they fail, at least they tried and if anything they gave another comany an idea to improve on, not make a mold of.

Quit it Jynxe

Wow Timi i am impressed, there is more there than meets the eye :D

Not to mention MMO companies are fresh out of original ideas, hence everyone resorting to franchises to base MMOs off of

im not sure obviously but i doubt they are out of ideas

i think the problem is that the guys on this forum who are dissatisfied with the current state of MMOs are in the minority generally and as long as the majority of people (????) are happy grinding away in games like WoW then we arent going to see much change in that

unless perhaps a new and ridiculously revolutionary MMO comes out but im not sure thats going to happen any time soon

It's not that a majority are happy. It's that there really aren't any good alternatives. Lets look at the options and these are just off the top of my head....

UO - out of date/went soft/not many play it
EQ - out of date
DAoC - out of date/not many play it
Shadowbane - Abysmal
Anarchy Online - out of date/not many play it
Saga of Ryzom - not many play it
EQ2 - haven't played long enough to make an assesment
WoW - new flavor/ive read many gamers are just playing till something else comes along/game is done at 60 (if you make it that far)
City of Heros - not designed for long periods of play/gets old quick
City of Villains - see CoH
Auto Assault - see CoH
Guild Wars - not an MMO
EvE - very complex and requires a lot of patience (one of the last hardcore MMO's)
SWG - SOE can't decide which game they will release this year

So, unless you're a die hard of a previous MMO that you've played, you're pretty much limited.

I want to see an MMO based on this!  :D

My bro has gone back to Eve again.
I go from MxO to single player adventures mainly.

EVE eats up a lot of my time :).

I lost my fourth ship yesterday :( to a pirate. Though considering that's less than one a month I've been playing I should be happy :).

It is though a very complex game and takes a lot of patience, and the ability to die and come back from it as you can lose a lot of ships in the game, I know folks that need new ships every week :(.

Look at the big upcoming MMOs: Star Trek Online, LotrO, AoC, Warhammer Online. These are the most anticipated MMOs through 2007. None are original, they're all spinoffs of a franchise or something with a pre-existing fan base. And most fantasy based MMOs that come out revolve around the SAME core: humans, elves, orcs, etc. The only thing that differs between them is the story. When it comes to original MMOs, they start from a 0 fanbase. The only support they have upon release are people who have been following it through production. Word of mouth and reviews is what will help get that MMO a fanbase. However, because it is something totally different and original, odds are it is not done by a mega-bucks developer, and therefore the resources are limited (take AO for example). And if it does come from a strong and financially stable developer and is original and fun, odds are it will not appeal to everyone because it does not follow "mainstream" MMO gameplay (take EVE online).

The MMO gamers have been conditioned to follow a certain type of game based off of certain types of genres. Anything original or creative quickly falls into the shadow of big-time MMOs that abide by mainstream rules or by franchise/fanbase MMOs.
