The Game to Beat WoW

Remember this :D :

Bad Decision on SOE's behalf:

Sony Online Entertainment, the Austin-based MMO specialist responsible for Star Wars: Galaxies, has confirmed reports that chief creative officer Raph Koster is leaving the firm to pursue other interests.

Prior to joining SOE, Koster worked with Origin Systems on Ultima Online, and during his six years with Sony he contributed to the development of EverQuest II. His main contribution to the firm was in the development of Star Wars: Galaxies, which underwent a major redesign that was intended to make the title easier to grasp and more action-orientated; however, the changes left a large number of fans disgruntled.

In a company statement, SOE stated: "Although [Koster's] current interests take him into areas that don't match SOE's strategic goals, we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours."

Koster often speaks at industry panel events on the creation and evolution of the MMO genre, and regularly updates his personal blog, through which his next development projects are likely to be announced.

The licensing contract for Star Wars: Galaxies is due to expire shortly, and rumours that LucasArts may be shopping around outside of SOE's camp have resurfaced - although there has been no official confirmation of this so far.

I know this has been stated in other threads, but thats right Koster has founded his own studio, Areae, just read some of the Execs, and then the advisors this game will be Sand Box I assure you all.

Just to remind you Koster work on Ultima Online, and SWG sandbox experiences.

A good article, and a New begining:

Koster hints at new titles in production

Former Sony Online Entertainment executive and MMOG veteran Raph Koster has officially opened the doors to his new studio.

Areae, which is based in San Diego, is billed as "a company dedicated to taking the tired old virtual world and making it into something fresh and new".

According to a statement on the studio's website, "We're working on some new tech that will literally change how virtual worlds are made. Weve got a cool world or two incubating on the back burner."

Koster worked on text MUDs in the early 90s before going on to take the role of creative lead for Ultima Online. He was later the creative director on Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, and from 2003 to 2006 he held the title of chief creative officer at Sony Online Entertainment.

Other Areae staff include VP of production John Donham, who was formerly vice president of development at SOE San Diego. The studio is currently hiring, and more details of its first projects are due to be announced next year.

If I had more experience in the market, I may of considered a job there, but I will send my CV anyway, hahaha.

IMO, Blizzard, NCSoft, SOE, amd others are quaking in there boots. I will definitely follow this title until its fruits fall off its tree.

w00t, w00t, w00t, w00t.

I doubt that the big companies are worried any. MMOs have changed drastically in rescent years. They have gone from a close knit community of generally nerds to encompasing everyone and their damn mom, just like console gaming has.

Koster's game will probably appeal to many who played MMOs before wow, but there are still tons of people who care nothing about a sandbox, community, or any of the innovative ideas that might get brought to the table.

Maybe I am too cynical, but that is just my though.

They must be made to see the benefits, and if Koster markets and promotes this right, we can see something big happen.

Koster is the Godfather of the MMO industry. You bet your ass Big MMO companies are not shrugging this off

and damn, if i had a degree and some street cred, I'd definitely apply for a job there.

I'd say Blizzard would be the only company that doesn't have to worry about them, but as for the other MMOs... say goodbye.

SWG was probably the best designed game ever to be released when it first came out. I remember how overwhelmed I was before I actually started learning things. If anyone else from Wanderhome remembers the first 7-9 months, they know what I'm talking about ;)

Blizzard, however, is currently monopolizing the MMO economy. There's a website somewhere showing what percentage of players are subscribing to what, and over 80% were WoW.

I'm definitely looking forward to this new game Koster has coming, because my friend and I constantly get frustrated with WoW and always look back on how good SWG was. I'm excited :)

I think people tend to look back at pre-CU with rose-colored glasses. It was an ambitious design for sure, and a fun game most of the time, but it was horribly flawed

Dude marry me? :P

I thought I was the only one out there who liked Wing Commander. lol

People don't like Wing Commander?

Blizzard has a lot of following because most of it's games have been hits. And Great Hits! Just take Diablo, Starcraft and Warcraft. They won't get worried, because they will always have someone. As long as they don't do big and bad mistakes, like SOE did. They will be fine.

However SOE in the other hand, is not as popular today. They have messed up greatly, and under Smedley's control it has delivered an incomplete product every time. Not only SWG. EQ has it's fair share of incomplete stuff, as well as the other SOE titles.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH *ASPLODES*

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wing_Commander_game_series

Basically a universe that has a war between giant cat like people and the humans... There was a movie on it, however it was pretty shitty (yes I own it because I'm a fan boy :P) and the cats were evil monsters whereas from what I remember from the game they were honorable types.

The last game released for it iirc, was a free online one that kinda sucked as well. /shrug I don't remember it all that well... just remember dling it over a week on dial up lol

Oh yah I think WC 3 was the first game to use real actors... Mark Hamil was the main character in the game. Was very very cool and interesting.

Wow, I thought I was a fanboy for renting the movie.

WC3 made my 3DO worth owning. It's still the only FMV crossover that ever actually worked. WC4 was not compatible with my sound card at the time, I actually upgraded just to play it. If they announced a Wing Commander MMO, I would squeal like a little girl.
