This is one hell of a deal. Its a good deal from a business standpoint AND a consumer standpoint. Most of the people bitching about the price tag are narrow minded, especially that gamer guy they quoted. His wallet wouldn't be crying if he took a basic economics class in high school. Think of the 360 as an Audi S4. That car is worth $40,000. Think of the PS3 as a BMW M3, which is worth around $50,000. They're both fast, sporty, banter new technologies, but the M3 is faster, has more cutting edge technology, is more reliable, and is much cheaper than any other car alternative to match or even beat it's speed and features. And since you can afford an S4, you probably have no problem spending an extra $10k to buy the M3. Therefore, if you can afford to spend $400, you can dish out $200 more.
Now lets approach this from a different standpoint. You might argue, "yeah, the core system is only $300." Say you do get the core system of the 360. You'll end up wasting at least 200-400 more in hardware upgrades to 1) play original xbox games, 2) save games, 3) play onlive via XBox Live Gold, 4) use voice chat in XBox Live, 5) buy the HD-DVD drive that Microsoft graciously will sell seperately later on this year so you can play even higher quality, more complex, and detailed games that will be coming out. Whereas with the PS3, you get all that built in with its basic system. All you're missing is wi-fi, a memory card reader, and HDMI, and of course, a bigger hard drive. Wi-Fi you can live without (as you've been living without it for the past (insert your age here) years when it comes to consoles. A memory card reader you can also live without, unless you have this huge urge to tarnsfer stuff between your PC and PS3 all the time, or maybe just take a saved game over to a friends house and play there (which doesn't make much sense, but anyway). HDMI is still many years away. It hasn't even made a dent in the TV market yet, and there really is no difference to the naked eye between HD and HDMI.
So, for $400 you can either get the loaded XBox 360 or the basic PS3. Just remember, that you will end up paying just as much as the bigger PS3 version in the end because you will be forced to buy an HD-DVD drive for your 360 in order to enjoy the FULL gaming experience, whereas you already get that with the basic PS3
