So umm who wants to help me with my W2?

Curse

Bored to death... maybe...
This is my first ever W2 to fill out so I have no idea what I'm doing. I do know that I have to get some fabled book from the library that has info which I need to fill out in the form. Any advice?

If you can find a way, go to HR Block. I've had them do my taxes for several years now, and every year I've not had any problems.

If you really want to learn about doing your taxes on your own, you can check things out like FreeFile:

http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html

or the 1040 headquarters on the IRS' website: http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=118506,00.html

If you have a family member that is an accountant or book keeper, give it to them. That's what I do.

Bah. Just go to the library, pick up the booklet, and you'll be fine. It has instructions. Look for the ones that say 1040 or 1040EZ. Those are your basic tax booklets. They should also have your state booklets too. But don't worry about getting ALL the booklets, forms or schedules you might need, because the ones you miss can be easily downloaded online.

I've been doing my own taxes all my life (I have a business) and have had no problems.

Plus, if all you made last year is on your W2's, then taxes is just one big long math problem.

Pick up a couple of booklets and do a practice run first.

If you're still unsure, then follow Tiv and Stav's advice and get some help. But still try to learn it. It's a very good thing to know how to do yourself ;).

Hrmm.. thanks for the info everyone. I actually went on the IRS official website and did a search for a company with which I was able to file my taxes online for free since I'm under 20. Since I worked a month and a half at CVS my total tax return is 23 dollars lol. However, because of that I'm getting 600 dollars this June or whatever because of that new thing that was passed not really sure on the details though. Anyone know anything about that bill or whatever that was passed to fix the economy so it doesn't go into recession?

It hasn't passed the Senate yet, just the House so it's not a sure thing. Not to mention that there's sure to be some set of requirements as to income level that you will have to meet in order to get that money, so I wouldn't make any plans for that cash just yet.

I thought the income level was on the max end though (My parents are complaining), and the amount of cash is being debated because they want to add in the Senior Citizens, which would lessen the amount per individual they'd get.

But the whole thing is being pushed back and forth - basically delaying when people will get it (or if). It's annoying because a LOT of people could use that kind of money. I know we could use it with oil prices, and electric prices (my electric bill was almost $200 this month!!!!) - it's crazy.

As far as I know there hasn't been any information released about what the requirements will be. Not to mention that in Curse's case, with his income being so low, and the fact that he's a kid and is more than likely claimed on his parents income tax return, I highly doubt he'll see any of that money.

It's being held up because asshole democrats are trying to get more money for unemployment and food stamps, which will probably lessen the amount that us working class people will see. I'm all for helping people, but at the rate that we're being taxed and with the rising prices of oil (as you mentioned) I personally feel they should just shut the fuck up and let me get my money back. That's all they're doing anyway, giving us back money they already snatched from our pockets. God bless America.

Hrmm well my Mom doesn't file taxes anymore since she cant work so she didn't claim me as a dependent. My father is dead and I'm 18 so I doubt anyone else could claim me as a child. :P

Could be anyone else in your household that pays the bills for you. (rent, food, etc)

For instance, if you have an aunt or grandparent who is there and taking care of the house, they may claim you on their taxes.

Whomever files first gets first right to do the claiming. So if you claim yourself, and then said individual tries to claim you, they get to pay the taxes without the claim. My parents had major issues with taxation the year I got married (since they weren't expecting it they had claimed me for most of the year and according to the irs, they shouldn't have).

But, if you are the "breadwinner" in the family, you have every right to claim yourself. And actually you may even be eligible to claim your mother if she's living in a home you pay for. (remember I'm not an accountant, and I hate tax laws so much I refuse to do my own.)

The only other person working in the house is my Uncle and I know he didn't claim me so I should be good to go.

If you live in Arlington County, VA, around tax time they have retired/off-duty IRS people available at the public library to do your taxes for free, yet I still go to H&R Block because I always meet the most intriguing people.

Jebus! Time to take the Christmas lights down.

We have a balance on oil versus electric heat (aka small heaters we keep on when it's cold) because both are insanely expensive.

Also, CT has passed a law this year allowing the electric company to raise their prices again.

Oh, and power bill should go up again next month because of the new system with it's kWatt power supply.
