So Far So Good

So I dared where I've been told not to dare by so many articles online...I switched to 64 bit OS. At first I was erie, couldnt help but think there must be wrong with microsoft handing out a free 64bit processor... After a few hours off loading back up programs ect I've found that 64 bit functions just the same as 32. So there are no new features or GUI changes. What I have found is that things HAVE gotten faster, alot actually... For the record I run a fairly good mid level computer : Asus K8N Nvidia 3 mobo, socket 754 AMD 2800+ 64bit (ofcourse), Geforce 6200, 1 gig of corsair RAM, and a 120 gig Hitachi 7200 RPM 8mb catch Harddrive. I havent gotten to play any games yet seeing as how I need to d/l that 4hour update for EQ2 again, but I have realised some things just in the OS. For instance when I was running 32 bit XP it would take me about 20mins to copy 1.3gigs of music over to a new place. It now takes me 12mins. Also it seems like I can handle more windows w/o locking up and my CPU % in use seems to be staying down. So far I have nothing bad to say about Win XP Pro x64 but we'll see when I try my first game in full 3d. I see no reason why 64bit processor owners should wait for windows Vista this version is perfectly stable, free, and most hardware is supported.

PS : Before you format and reinstall make sure you find and burn 64bit versions of your drivers for your mobo (VERY IMPORTANT NO INTERNET W/O), Video Card, Sound Card, and Chipset.

 on 64 bit OS's

so how much of these improvements can't be just attributable to a fresh install on a newly formatted hard drive? how does copying speeds have anything to do with processing speed?

am I wrong in assuming that you will only see improvements in software if the software actually supports 64 bits?

Yes I am sure that some of this benefit did come from my fresh nstall after a year. But windows does still operate using all 64 bits which means its less confined strain on the processor when running windows and a game. In other words if I am running a game and windows, windows maybe untilzing field of that second 32bits and releiving stress from the game that operating on the first half. This is what I have been led to beleive. Only your windows drivers and hardware use the 64bits and a few games. In taskmanager it tells you whats still running in 32bit...

So is it worth it? I would download it and use it for my self. But i have heard some horror storys with the way it will just put your computer in to total melt down.

Running it right now typing this message to you... Is it worth it is up to you though. I say yes just because its compatible with everything and gives windows better performance... Frankly theres no reason not to since it supports everything XP x32 does...
