RPG: Which ones have you tried? What can you recommend?

zanaiomih

The magic never ends...
As the title says, what have you tried? Any you can recommend? Which ones are your absolute favourites?

I'm used to real roleplaying, not hard chore roleplaying, but far from just sitting there rolling dice and scream who did the most damage. Something in between, and its great fun! :D Did some live RPG too, went to an event, also fun stuff ^_^

I've tried out quite a few myself:
-Rolemaster
-Vampire - The Maquerade (My absolute favourite of them all!!)
-Pheonix
-Twilight 2000
-PBI (Love this one; homemade with Pheonix command's sys applied to it)
-Call of Cthulu
-Dungeons and Dragons
-Dragons and Deamons (Swedish version of DnD sort of speak, based on D20; Tried them all)
-Mutant (1 and 2)
-Neotech
-Viking
-Katar
-Western
-Babylon 5
-Star Wars
-Star Trek
-Götterdämerung (About to try this one out now)

...and more I'm sure, just can't remember right now :P

Vampire: The Masquerade (I still have the character sheet somewhere, will post it later)
Werewolf
DnD
ADnD
Forgotten Realms

:P

We got to a point in the Vampire chronicle, where the Storyteller started changing rules to incorporate DnD's features. It was wicked, the story took us through several dimensions, also over a span of 2000 years. It was really interesting to enchant bullets (and other weapons) with elements.

My clan was Tremere.

Ah, I started out as a tremere when I first tried vamp out, but my one and favourite is and will stay...my 5th gen assamite ;)
(The world ended, so she is no more tho... :( )

Lets see.........I have played (and still do on occasion)

DnD
ADnD
3rd Ed DnD (my group has our own world with its own lore, gods and past)
Alternity (absolute worst piece of garbage out there)
Star Wars
Star Trek
Rifts
G.U.R.P.S
Shadowrun
D20 Modern
Battletech (or Robotech can't remember exactly)
Warhammer (original PnP game not what it has become)

we also play a space based combat game that we designed over several years. We continue to play test it on occassion and it still has a ton of things that need to be worked out. Not easy to design a game worth playing but we are sure giving it a go.

Most of my group are RPGA GM's so we do hold some events at local comic book stores. Losts of fun but tiring work trying to make scenerios and such for play by a llot of people.

If you're into a cinematic style of rping I'd take a look at Savage Worlds, it's by the same people who did Deadlands. I can't say enough good things about this system. It has a huge fan base that's made rules for most any other game setting out there. It also does star wars roleplaying better than any star wars RPG I've seen(yes, even the beloved WEG game) /runhide

I pretty much ditched all my other games once I found it ^_^ I think ya can still get their "test drive" pdf from the website at www.greatwhitegames.com

Lies. SWRPG made by WEG is the best RPG ever. It was so simple you spent your time having fun instead of using a calculator and numerous charts to figure out what happened. All you needed were a shitload of 6-sided dice.

Thats letting it loose a little too much imo :P 3rd generations is almost imposible to RP the right way :P But Im sure it was great fun to be that powerful! :D

Sounds interesting, will bring this up in my group, thanks! :)

Oh, its cool and great fun to come up with new systems. But yes, takes a lot of work...

I haven't done much GM myself, tried it a couple of times, but not something for me. My bf is one tho, great at it too! ;)

And oh, I tried DC Heroes - great fun to play heroes in tights! :D

I never actually got to paper RP. I always wanted to, but my parents pushed me away from it (tho my brothers and sisters did - maybe my mom didn't want me bothering them). I've read up on a few, just never got into it.

Vampire: The Maquerade (PC) was a lot better than the reviews would justify. The problem is that it was in the era of Diablo I and Diablo II and there were too many comparisons. Vampire wasn't going after a Diablo clone as they were a story line.

It's one of few games I bothered playing from beginning to end and loved every moment of it and was actually pretty disappointed when it was over.

D&D ( In all its incarnations )
Buck Rogers ( another TSR game based somewhat on 2nd Edition AD&D rules)
Palladium
Champions ( 3rd through 5th editions currently called Hero System )
Villians and Vigilantes
Mechwarrior
Star Trek ( both versions)
Star Wars ( both versions)
Runequest
Twilight 2000
Shadowrun
CyberPunk
Vampire the Masquerade
Werewolf
Mage
Silver Age Sentinels
GURPS ( Space, Supers, Car Wars)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Gamma World
Travellor
Travellor 2000

Okay

For Fantasy I recommend DnD. It is probably the best at depicting fantasy. ( I prefer 2nd over 1st, I like 3rd and 3.5 as well )

For Superherois I recommend Hero System 5th Edition ( which is what Champions grew into.) Although a generic system it is best used in a superheroic game I think.

For Sci Fi to be honest there isn't a real good one. Hero System 5th Edition can be used for a Sci Fi game but I feel it doesn't really capture space opera, neither really does the other sci fi games I've tried over the years.

that's the ones I remember over the years.

the only ones i every got into and not sure if some of them are around but

AD&D (any edition)
Cyber Punk
Shadow Run
All the white wolf series (vampre, werewolf, mage)
Ars Magica

I always liked both Shadowrun and there used to be an old Marvel comics one many years ago that was pretty cool. Unfortunately both product lines where discountiued though new companies have taking over Shadowrun since FASA went out of business and its made a limited comeback.

As a side note for those intrested in Shadowrun Microsoft is actuly making a PC and X-Box version of it due out in april but its not an rpg they decided instead to make it a Halo style shooter and have already abandoned single player mode in favor of a purely online game like quake 3 arena not sure how that is going to work but Microsoft is supposedly planing to push it as one of the XBOX 360s flagship games.

Some cool ideas for new ones here, thanks! :) Keep it rolling, always nice to hear what peeps think of different RPGs - pen and paper as well as PC games :)

I used to play Marvel Comics RPG and the DC RPG too, I forgot about them in the list above :).

Marvel one was pretty good, its not as open as Champions though. DC though wasn't as good I thought.

Oh and just so that you know White Wolf is becoming a subsidiary of CCP. It is in the works for a pen and paper version of EVE by White Wolf and a World of Darkness Game by CCP for the computer.

In my group we usually take a RPG, try it out and then see if we like the sys. If not, we just apply a sys we like, one of them being Pheonix command, or we just change it so we like it. I dont like it when one is a slave to the book and it's rules. Change it so you like it, so it applies to your group of peeps ;) The books are just guidlines imo :)
