Original Unaltered SW Trilogy on DVD

http://www.starwars.com/episode-iv/release...ws20060503.html

In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. International release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.

"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars. Topping it off with a new interactive adventure makes September 12 a red-letter day for Star Wars fans."

I think this is purely a marketing scam to make more money! It's the same idea as last year with Battlefront II and RotS dvd release. They need to get SW stuff out to keep people interested.
And why does it need to be such a limited release too?
It's gonna sell out before Xmas and no one can buy it in the new year with all of their Santa money. <_<
I hope the extras are worth the money to get me to buy it.

I have a feeling there won't be any new extras. Its what people asked for, its what people are gonna get. "The original theatrical release". In all its grainy scratched up 1977 glory. Oh, you already slit the shrinkwrap and opened the thing? Tough shit pal, no returns on opened dvds.

Careful whatcha wish for :P

There will be some stuff but the use of "new" these days is always misleading. <_<
I remember the 1st lot of WB dvds which contained masses of extras!
Meaning just the trailer to the film you already brought!

<------ prefers to watch the OT VHS comapred to the remastered DVDs

Yeah, this is exactly what I was wishing for. This will be the only way I will buy a SW DVD. Finally....Han will get to shoot first once again.

omg i bought a set off amazon last year thinking it would be these and i was almost crying when i saw the cantina scene with greedo and han :(

i really dont like a lot of the shitty changes they made like replacing anakins ghost on rotj with hayden whatshisface

Bah ive had this for awhile now, its freely available on www.myspleen.net, no extras on it but its in DVD format perfect for burning and its ripped from the laserdisc release so it looks pretty decent. I cant stand how they changed the catina scene in the re releases also Jar Jar screaming at the end of ROTJ makes me want to vomit, so i had to get the originals.

I am within visual range of my VHS box set trilogy

That's basically what I got...finally got them onto DVD myself (thanks to help from some Wanderhomies). Still going to buy this set though.

I prefer the remastered set... if all they did was change it back to where Han shoots first I'd be in heaven.

That's my ONLY gripe with the latest remastered special edition versions.

Az- screw you and your marketing scam, im willing to pay of for those Dvds. I have NOT bought the trilogy dueto the "altered" versions of the films. I willglady and greadily buy these dvds as soon as they hit shelves. this is what alot of us have been waiting for.
Also, how cool would it be to have the original films on dvd, instead of shitty vhs??

While I was out west, my bro gave away my original trilogy VHS tapes :(

Hmm this might be something I could have and use.

There were a lot of things cut from the films. Like the opening sequences from A New Hope and Return of the Jedi that were originally filmed for those movies. The stuff in Anchorhead, and then Luke's reunion with Biggs just before the Battle of Yavin for example, as well as Luke crafting his new lightsaber on Tatooine before leaving to rescue Han in Return of the Jedi. Probably other stuff cut too, the question is is it of quality you'd want to include.

I think you are thinking of the "THX" versions that were only released on VHS. In that version, Lucas just cleaned up the special effects of everything, but left the scenes unfucked with.

Hmmmmmmm....maybe I can find that version on VHS somewhere and turn that into DVDs...

Personally I prefer the THX remake versions they put out on VHS for the 20th (I believe) year anniversary. I bought the new DVD of the olf trilogy when it came out and was utterly disappointed. They re-re-did everything specail effects wise, and more often than not screwed it up. The DVDs that are out now really aren't an improvement over the VHS that got put out back when I was in junior high, and with the changes to scenes they are in some aspects worse. So even though I bought the DVDs that already came out...I will probably be purchasing these.

PS. yes..han did shoot first.

No, what I mean is I prefer the versions that you buy on DVD right now, minus the Greedo shooting first. If they just changed that one scene back to the way it used to be, the movies would be perfect.

Ill be buying this I hate the remakes and cant sit through em.

I can finally get rid of my monster sized remastered laser disks.

The latest big rumour and flames going on is that the dvds will be taken from the earlier Laser Disc versions.
This means that they won't be Anamorphic and not as high quality.

So even though they are on Dvd they won't be up to top notch dvd quality that is considered standard by todays dvd market.
Also they won't be touched up or anything. Basically a quick conversion without putting loads of money into the dvd releases.

All this is rumours. I've not heard anything official yet.
