From what I was told the christmas tree came from norse mythology where they considered the evergreen to be a symbol of life as it was green even in the winter.

Well...
He's based on a saint (St Nikolaus) who when he was alive (about 1600 years ago or so) lived in what is today Turkey (which was at that time populated by Greeks). So the basis is a religious symbol, but Coca Cola made Santa into a fat man dressed in red and trademarked him. Here in Norway he's merged with our mythology in a different way. He has been given a name that connects him with our old tales of small mischievous small "nisser" who lives outside. He's our "julenisse." "Jul" is what we call Christmas.

So to sum it up, not anymore, at least not here.

It was this person who gave some presents to the poor that I mentioned above that was the start of it. And someone made a tradition out of it along the line, probably a toy or sweets company that wanted money at the end of the year. :P (The last sentence is my assumption based on what Christmas has turned into)

Santa is not trademarked, at least not in the United States. No one in the US can trademark him, which is why you see him on many different products. From Wikipedia:

Santa Claus later appeared in various colored costumes as he gradually became amalgamated with the figure of Father Christmas, but red soon became popular after he appeared wearing such on an 1885 Christmas card.

Images of Santa Claus were further cemented through Haddon Sundblom's depiction of him for The Coca-Cola Company's Christmas advertising. The popularity of the image spawned urban legends that Santa Claus was in fact invented by Coca-Cola. Nevertheless, Santa Claus and Coca-Cola have been closely associated, until Santa was replaced in advertising by Coca-Cola's polar bears in 2005.[2][/b]

Sorry, bad choice of words.
English is my second language (my excuse whenever I'm not able to express myself right in English)

He might not be a registred trademark, or even a trademark, but you can't deny that the Santa Claus that they market (or marketed) so heavily makes you draw a connection between the two, which is exactly why they have spent those millions or maybe even billions of dollars in worldwide advertising over the years.

Yes, I'll absolutely give it to you that Coca Cola helped popularize Santa :).

Yeah but Coca Cola fired Santa and employed Polar Bears and Penguins.
