Need video capture help

What are good programs to use to capture video from a VCR into a computer (have the hardware component already). The software I have keeps freezing, so does Microsoft's Movie Maker 2.1 (it freezes when I try to create file after capturing video).

The software doesn't have to be free, but it would be nice. Thanks for the help.

Um I remebering using a program a long time ago to capture with it was I believe Roxio something or other it came on a cd that said Roxio easy cd creator. I guess there still around http://www.roxio.com/en/index.jhtml;jsessi...questid=5752639 its not free but Im sure you know how to get the other kind of free software :)

Oh another thing, I found in the past when I did video editing, that when it froze up during capture 50%-70% of the time it was due to choosing a codec I dont have installed or bad codec installation.

That looks great for creating and editing DVDs, I need software to capture the video output of a VCR being pushed out to a USB to capture it to a MPEG or WMV file format.

Thanks for the reply though

Thanks again.

Here's the story, I got like 3 different capture programs loaded in right now, all 3 have been able to "capture" the video from the USB port but then when I go to save the file the program locks up and I need to power off the computer to return to a good state. Any comments?

Now mind you it locks up AFTER the progress bar complets, so the files are the size they should be, but it is like the program locks up when it tries to close the file. Hard to explain.

Humm, are you doing anything like selecting a codec or anything like that. Im trying to remember me and a buddy had a similar thing happen let me see if i can get ahold of him. Damn no answer. Oh file size could be to big. Some programs and comps cant handle big chunks of video. so you have to capture in chunks.

Yeah I was reading up on a "codex" problem (sorry, computer savvy, but not video capture savvy) and I looked for codexs on my cpmputer and none of them look like a normal problem one.

Try capturing in smaller sizes

Damn all this video trouble shooting makes me want to reinstall all my software and play around again.

Don't matter file size, happened with a 5 second clip.

Hum give me a minute to think and see if i can remember. Im pretty sure this happened to me at least once. Do you have a second comp to see if its repeatable on?

No, unfortuently not.

I have even gone so far as to turn down the hardware accleration on my computer....to no avail. :(

ya hardware acceleration usually never helps. what program are you mainly using see if i can dig some info up.

ah here we go a good article that might help a little.

Have tried:

ProPixDVD
Windows Movie Maker
Nicerer Capturer
AVS Video Suite

Andthey all hang at the same point, after the capture is done and saving the file. Well, it is getting worse now...now Movie Maker (the one that I have been using the most) is starting to hang before I even get to thecapture window. I hope I haven't screwed too much up with all this codec, hardware accleration changes I have been making.

Oh, the hardware device I am using is the CameraMate Video Safe

Various well known video editing software I sell:
Pinnacle Studio 10
Adobe Premiere Elements
Nero
Ulead DVD something
Roxio Videowave

Dazzle is a good usb box to capture video

Shoot Um I cant find anything usefull on that item hehe. It could be that it will only capture and output using there software that came with it.

I would spend 20 or 30 bucks and get a capture card so you can go straight to the comp with the vcr instead of that hum thingy

Don't think so, cause Movie Maker has a distinct selection to use that exact device. ANyways the software that comes with it hangs at the same exact place as all of the others do. Don't know if it is a hardware problem with this CameraMate device or is it a problem with my O/S.

Read somewhere that reinstalling SP2 solves a lot of issues....so I think I am going to try that next.

Thanks again for all your help.

Well I hope reinstalling sp2 helps you might try and reinstall the programs after sp2 also.

Just a hint to anyone, do NOT uninstall SP2 with not having a backup disk of some sort.

Almost ruined the computer....ROFL!!!!!
