My TV Died

I come home from work and my TV died. After ONLY 7 YEARS. I checked the troubleshooting manual and it says, "if there is no picture or sound and the red light is blinking in front, please contact your local service center." Well fuck. My dad had bought two 27 inch RCAs way back in the mid-80s. One died, but the other we gave to a family friend 7 years ago and it's still going strong. I have a 27 inch Sony from 1984 in my basement that still works like a charm. I have a small 12 inch Sony from 1978 in my kitchen that still rocks the house. BUT MY AWESOME SONY WEGA DIES AFTER 7 YEARS?????? GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

That's what you get for buying Sony! BUWAHAHHAH!

No, but I suppose because it was a somewhat newer technology (I assume it was the flatscreen CRT).
 
I could have told you SONY is crap; but actually all electronics are like that now. Stuff was built like tanks back in the days of those other TVs you mentioned. But this is how they keep down costs enough to make a profit these days by using cheap parts. Besides; long term-durability doesn't sell TVs. They only care that it lasts out the 2 years of the warranty or whatever. Beyond that you are just a lost customer for the remaining life of the TV. You're not supposed to keep a TV for seven years. You need the new super duper HD supreme sets and SONY needs more of your money. :P
 
Sony's department of "the" has gone to the dogs lately. Their 'WE ARE THE SHIT' marketing and product support used to be great, but.. with the "the" department's fall from grace, lately that's just turned into 'WE ARE SHIT'. Like a significant percentage of ps2 owners, I don't trust their lasers at all. (With a derelict ps2, cd player, and dvd platter to show for it.)
 
New electronics aren't made to last, only old stuff will last more then 10 years 'couse it's made for it... <_<

That would be my suggestion.


But to say that Sony hardware is not of the same quality as 10-15+ years ago would just be too obvious.





...I do like the new Samsung TVs though.
 
FYI, the quality of TV's has drastically dropped with every company. We had a Zenith TV since like 84. Nice TV, I'm not home entertainment nut so it worked just fine. The thing finally gave up and wasnt worth it to fix. So me and my parents go and buy a samsung TV, beleive its a tube TV just one of the newer shallow ones. 4 months later the TV clicks like it wants to go on but doesnt. After 3 months of back and forth with the company they say they dont make parts for a 4 MONTH OLD TV. Now during this time we're using a little 18" TV sittin ontop of our nice new broken one. Finally we give up with Samsung and go to bestbuy and tell them what happened. They take the TV back and say they will deal with samsung and give us an upgraded TV. We've had that for about 5months and half way through that period the TV does the same thing and magically fixes its self. Long story short buy old TV's from garage sales :D

There is a difference between quality at factory release, and quality at the 7 year mark. If you haven't noticed a quality difference between Sony's hardware (specifically their TVs) between now and 10+ years ago, then I really don't know what to say.
 
My other Sony Wega is the same exact model, purchased on the same date from the same place. Still works like a charm. I've accepted that this TV in particular was sub-par in its standards. Of course, everyone loves to pounce on a company for one fault in the background of prior successes *coughcoughhinthintcough*. 80/20 rule at it's best!
 
at home weve had a couple of toshiba tvs for like 12 years now ad they are still going strong. the colours arent even fading in different areas yet! sure they were expensive back then but we had just gotten robbed so had some nice insurance money to spend :D

the only thing failing on them is the remote controls because they have been used so much

Sony's have fell in reliability ratings for years. But, believe whatever you want to believe.
 
Fluffy, ALL companies have had shittier qualities since 1980. Be fair in comparisons. Sony Wegas were the best TVs as of 2000. Today, Samsung's are, and I've pretty much decided on a 30" Samsung SlimFit HDTV as my replacement. At least I don't judge past products by future faults from a company.
 
I had a dream last night that my dogs tore the screen open and jumped inside my tv last night, was really wierd :wacko:
 
I'd say Phillips, Toshiba, and Panasonic are at the forefront of Plasma Technology these days. I would never go personally for an LCD these days as their colour depth is poor, and their electronic colour creation system makes the picture look artificial. Also LCD's have many issues with trailing in sports etc, so if I were you I'd go Plasma.

If you've got the money these days, I'd get a Phillips, but if you wait the next generation of Sony TV's will be out, with integrated cell technology. Yes, that’s right the same technology that is in the PS3 is in TV's, its job is to manage the colour distribution, and ensures a crisp picture in every frame.

As I have stated before SAMSUNGS are shite, Phillips ownz the market right now.
 
I'm not getting a plasma OR an LCD. They're a waste of money and will be obsolete within 3-4 years. SlimFit Tube FTW...Tubes give the best picture, period.
