LINUX

Okay, I run Windows XP. I like it well enough, I can play most my games, can do homework stuff on it, and surf the internet, that's good enough for me.

However my BROTHER'S computer got screwed up when he was over here during Christmas Break, and I just got around to working on it. I tried installing an old Windows 98 CD on it (because I don't have a copy of XP for his computer), but I can't find the right drivers (most importantly can't find the right network drivers, and his floppy drive is broken, so I've been going through alot of CD-R's trying to get the right drivers on it).

SO, I was wondering can you still run alot of games on Linux even though they are unsupported? Also other Microsoft programs like Word, would they work? And also what do you think of Linux if you've ever used it?

OH and very important - What version of Linux should I get (is the best to get for free and also whichever one is cheapest but the best for the price, etc.)

Ok heres what i know about Linux from having a network IT cousin. Its alot of string based commands IE no GUI. Its good for supporting servers and having low end OS usage. You can configure it to do anything you want it to do, so you should with the right amount of determination be able to get any game to work on it. And from what I've heard it supports 64 bit processors. The down side to it is you have to learn it inside out just to be able to use it. If your looking to use it for more driver support I doubt you'll find it in that applications. If you are looking to use it for better processor support d/l Win XP Pro x64 for free from msoft, I have it and it works great. If your still interested in toying with linux you can always partition and dual boot your computer. This would give you the option to select Win Xp or Linux as your operating system when you start your computer. As for your cuz alot of those problems with win 98 are from windows 98 itself having shitty plug and play by todays hardware standards. A copy of Win Xp would probably be able to plug and play all of the things our having trouble with in 98. If your forced to run 98 find out his mobo model and d/l the drivers for it that should clear up any integrated port troubles...

PS: Dont get Win Xp Pro x64 if you cant find Video Card, mobo, and soundcard drivers in 64bit...it matters.

Okay yeah I was also going to say I would need to know if Linux has a Plug and Play driver detection thing, but sounds like not. I do know though that there are GUI Linux versions out there, just don't know what they are capable of.

Like how you said you can do whatever you want with Linux, I'm sure there are versions that run a significant number of present-day-games out there somewhere, just need some tips where to look.

Okay I was just doing some reading on where to get Windows XP and it seems there are sites that sell you CD-keys and individual licences or something like that. Is that legit and where is the best place to get them if it is? Because XP would just be better I know how it works.

/puts on the linux geek hat.

Honestly for most end users it's not worth it. 85% of games don't work with it. (including 99% of mmo's. there may be one out there thatdoes, but not that i know of.)

You can get a Windows Emulator, but it'll be slow if you don't have a decent system.

You need to know what you are doing when you install. Drivers and things aren't auto-installed like windows.

I used to have a partioned hard-drive on my system with debian, but i just never used it anymore.

I couldn't agree more with Tiv. If you are into the geek side of Operating systems then lynux is up your alley. But you do not take on the world of Lynux if you want to play games leave that for windows. If you want to harness true power of Hacking (not that script kiddie bullshit leet speak crew) but hard core hacking and learning the true side of computers then lynux is the way to go.

Spend some time of mininova.org and you can get a good copy of windows xp for your cousins PC. stay arway from 98 at all costs :)

Good luck

Indeed...

I have my desktop system that I run games and what not on, but I have Redhat on my laptop. If he's not into games, but just general computer usage, Linux FTW. OpenOffice > All.

And yes, true hackers use Linux :P.

I be lovin' the Linux and all, don't get me wrong, but here's my opinion:

If you have to ask if you should switch to Linux, you shouldn't.

True hackers write their own shell.

RedHat. lol...

Slackware > RedHat

If you are going geek, don't half-ass it.
