It is providing it's own service. This is merely an extension that may not only be limited to the PS3 (Smed's involvement hints Xfire integration in SOE's games as well, hence the PC market). And it's service is free of charge, unlike Live.

Not really, I like it.
 
I've never played POS, cause i hate Final Fantasy, its genre, its games, its characters, its story, etc, so I can't really vouch for it. Although it is limited to two games in the U.S., I think with the PS3, POS will get a revamp to cater to much more games and genres, like Call of Duty and stuff.
