(the lengthy reply that took too long to write for the edited double-reply above.. silly forums)

Friends come in all shapes, sizes, colors, textures, ages, densities, all kinds of categories. Where they came from is a badge of courage for some (law school, basic training, ER residency, the bottom of the DWB), something to laugh at or be shunned by others (friends you met in PTA meetings, single-parent chat rooms, hanging out in a tech-support forum). Some are "regulars" we see almost daily (the guy that gives you the knowing head-nod at your local eatery, the older gentleman who always seems to be the one bagging your groceries, that same old hag crossing guard at the elementary school you drive by every day), some go through longer stretches between visits (GPs, shrinks, specialists, your insurance agent, the guy in the parts department at the auto dealer, the one blue shirt at Best Buy with a single clue), and some you hardly ever see (family you only see for 'events', relatives out of state, old college/highschool buddies that have spread to the corners of the globe).

Not everybody's "friendslist" is the same, or made up of the same types of people. We lack the language in many cases to fit new people into old roles with these technological helpers of textmessaging, IM'ing, "oh hold on, that's my celly blowin' up..." phones in our ears 24/7, forums, games, chats... new communities, new ways to be exposed to new people for your mind's selection committee. Which of these shall I call "friend" some day?

So why do some of us cringe when "offline" friends laugh at us for hanging out in here? Or being addicted-enough to an online game to call the people we play with "friends", even though we've never met in real space? Its a problem for the young, not the old. The old codgers playing dominoes at the nursing home could care less what anyone thinks about who they're playing with. They're just happy to have someone TO play with. :) A lesson a few of our friends NOT on the bleeding edge of technology could stand to learn, I'd wager.

I dunno about you, but I don't make a mental distinction unless asked to. "RL friends" vs. "online friends". Where's that divide? Do people span both groups? What makes them close? You realize you can't put your RL friends on /addignore as easily (shame, sometimes...), just like you can't follow a waypoint to a guildie's RL house, pick them up and take them out for a bite, just to clear the air, calm them down, show your appreciation, propose, smack them upside the head, buy that beer you've been saying you owe them, whatever it is. We lack the language - and when we try to find it, we laugh at the inconsistencies. Yet another "you know you SWG too much when..." thread in the making. Its a common frame of reference for all of us though, a shared imaginary language we've formed together through the years. Outsiders won't understand it. Hang *that* in your badge-list. :)

Pleased to call Ker a friend. She puts up with my rants, both in-game and out. That's gotta count for something, and "friend" works pretty well for me. :D
