I just pulled this from ve3d.com. Just at the rumor stage....but I sure can imagine a quality SWG put out by bioware..../DROOL. I've never wanted a rumor to be more true than this....
Raph Koster Leaves SOE? And other SWG related rumors 03:29 pm - Elia 'Mithan' Doulia - Games: MMOG (20 comments)
Like Rumors? Here is a post full of them and they all concern Star Wars Galaxies and associated parties.
Kotaku is reporting today that Raph Koster has left Sony to start his own company. As of yet, there has been no official statement and after checking out Raph's blog, it appears he is at the GDC so we may hear something later about this.
As for the SWG License itself, there are a few "rumors" going around that Lucas Arts has pulled their SWG license from Sony and that they will be publishing the game themselves. Lending weight to that is another post from a fan looking for a copy of SWG and being told that it will be re-released in June by Lucas Arts.
Another rumor floating around in a few areas but also mentioned in the post above is that Bioware has been contracted to develop a new, better Star Wars Galaxies, with a different name. Now, this is quite a jump so who knows, but some found it curious that a BioWare developer would reply to a post made by a fan about it and while the Dev didn't say yes or no, the possibility is there since they didn't flat out deny it.
Here is the BioWare Dev Quote:
Our studio, BioWare Edmonton, is still firmly pursuing the development of our own intellectual properties as we have been for some time.
Our new sister studio, BioWare Austin, has yet to state what stance they will be taking. I would refrain from assuming anything, one way or the other, until they've released more information.
So, is BioWare going to develop a new Star Wars MMO? Hard to say, but regardless of what you may think of SWG, Star Wars has a very rich world that is ripe for a good MMO so I think it is likely we will see another Star Wars MMO on the market at some point (if they did kill SWG). BioWare and Lucas Arts also have a great relationship and we all remember what a great job BioWare did with Knights of the Old Republic.
If all of this (or even part of it) is true, there are definitely going to be some tough times for SOE, but at least they are not alone. I have heard rumors from a few different sources that other MMO developers are feeling the heat as well. For instance, Turbine reportedly isn't too pleased with initial Dungeon and Dragons Online sales numbers.
