computer troubles

Im trying to run the windows diagnostic test to test the RAM on my semi-new laptop. the problem is it needs a floppy drive to run (same for the other ram tests ive found), and I dont have a floppy drive on that computer. the windows program that makes the diagnostic disk is also set up to make a .iso file to be put on a CD, but I dont know how to do that.

so I need to either:
A.) find out how to get a .iso onto a CD
B.) find a test I can do that works differently
C.) (input clever option C here)

any ideas?

If you have a cd burner you can use nero, or alcohol 120% proof to make a bootable cd. you can use this program http://www.memtest86.com/ it has the instructions on how to make the bootable cd and stuff. I usually use nero but some cd burners are not compatible with nero.

program called Fireburner has a good VisCue burner/ISO parser/BIN chunker.

or

Alcohol120%

or

I think Nero does .iso

ok, finally got a bootable disk that runs the memtest86. problem is getting by disk drive to actually boot it. the disk works fine on my other comp, but on this one the disk will not load and instead windows just starts loading. any ideas?

Adjust your bios settings, or is there no bios loading in right now?

Make sure to go into the bios and set your cdrom drive to boot up before the hard drive( C ) on start up. IF that doesnt work there is the possiblity that, that cdrom drive does not support atapi, and you would probably have to switch out the drives with the one that works.

Just realized, I probably should explain, your bios settings are part of the computer settings that can be altered when you hit like F1 or F2 during the bootup procedure, in those settings you can change the boot loading order placing your hard drive before your disk drive.

that got it to work. there were only 61,718 errors after the first run through. /die :(

running some more tests now, as well as seeing if its still under warranty

argh that sucks man. i had some faulty ram that was causing my comp to not boot at all (the screen didnt even turn on) and it was only a couple of months old :(

Good luck with it. If you got more questions feel free to ask, there are several computer savvy folk here ready to help.

he he he I married one.
he has to fix mine today.... everynow and then my lcd turns pink when I accidently knock my computer with my chair.

marry a computer geek...works for me.

dell is replacing the RAM, and its already here (free one day delivery- hell yes!). just wondering if theres anything I should be careful about when replacing it

make sure to whats the word..... destatisize? well get rid of static. think you can do it by touching a non painted metal surface thats grounded i think......also make sure its in properly. i had an incident once where one of my sticks wasnt pushed in all the way

up and running :) passed the diagnostic tests and swg successfully ran without crashing, which is a nice improvement

Cool. Now the only issue is you had to ruin your computer with SWG.

Oooh, damn, didin't get to respond here. One thing to make sure when installing memory is to de-staticize yourself. Memory is really easy to fry with your fingers. Another thing, DIMM and SIMM's are easy to put in backwords :P.
