PS3 insurance

So now apparently Sony is selling insurance for PS3's in case it breaks. I remember back in the day the repair costs of PS1 and PS2 were something like a flat rate of 60% of the sale cost (So back when PS2 cost $200; for a repair you would pay $120 no matter what the problem was.) If they still go by that system, an out of warranty repair for a broken PS3 would cost $360..... so I would definitely spring for the insurance if I had a PS3. Although it still seems like bullshit anyway that they rip you off for more money after already spending a rediculous amount for the system in the first place, instead of just building the system durable enough to last so you never need repairs.

Microsoft is the same.

I feel sorry for the elctronics industry these days, I remember a time when electronic devices where made to last forever, but now they are lucky to last past there warranty.

Unfortunately repairs by someone else is usually impossible because Sony doesn't sell the parts (replacement laser optics, etc.) and also nobody else has calibration jigs or software. So even if you can get it repaired by one of those companies that buys the stolen lasers in China or something, it will suck because they have no way to calibrate that laser correctly.

the industry is doing fine as far as i can tell - it is us that are getting fucked over

I don't even understand why it has to be like that for consoles. I've had DVD drives on my PC that have lasted for 5+ years of pretty much consistant use every day with no problems whatsoever. But for some reason consoles insist on using some kind of cheap ass drives that breaks down within 2 years. I've had a PS1 that got disc read errors after 3 years, and 2 PS2s that both broke down within 2 years. (Not to just pick on Sony, my gamecube lasted a little longer but still developed disc read error after like 4 years; and I know the Xboxes have problems too.) This problem will continue as long as electronics makers insist on using cheap-ass parts as a way to keep costs down.

CD and DVD drives are complicated delicate mechanisms with moving parts. Even the cheap ones tend to last longer in tower computers because they don't get bashed around much. Consoles get pretty beat up just by getting moved around and bumped a lot. Also, heat dissipation in consoles is more of a problem than in computers, because there tends to be more airflow through computers to keep the other components cool.

Laptops, which get beat up pretty good too, and have heat dissipation problems, have high rates of drive failure, probably similar to what consoles get when mapped against device use time.

Well I dunno about the moving around thing because my consoles pretty much just sit there on the shelf under the TV. You may be right about the heat dissipation thing though.

I really think console makers should consider making future consoles more PC-like with replaceable parts instead of insisting on using their own proprietary crap all the time. If PS3 had a removable blu-ray drive dock that accepted any standard PC drive, it would solve so many problems. And it would probably be better anyway because in the future the drive is gonna be so outdated and slow compared to newer faster drives. But if the drive was removable it could be replaced with newer 2x, 4x, etc... blu-ray drives in the future. And of course the drives will come way down in price from what they are now so this would be feasible. If they were smart they would do this, but I know it will never happen. Of course they need to have a stranglehold on every technology inside that box for some dumb reason. And don't give me crap that they have to keep a lock on the console because of hackers. Wii, PS3 and 360 were already running burned discs within 3 months of release as is so that is a lost cause no matter how locked down it is.

wow everyone seems to bitch alot about this stuff for being gamers, and if they had removeable drives then how would they expect to come out with a new system and have people buy it when they could just upgrade thier old system to the new ones capabilities. Do we want sony to fall as a company? Do you really want a microsoft dictatorship over the gaming industry? its bad enough there is as little competition as there is

Well not suggesting the main processor and other mobo components would be replaceable. Removable disc drives and hard drives aren't going to prevent them from bringing out new systems. I mean of course they'd still be able to come up with new Cell processor that does 500 quadrillion teraflops or whatever.

And I don't think anyone has problems with competition. Really the only problem I have is Sony (and Microsoft too but not as bad) breaking the tradition of $300 consoles (adjusted for inflation cause technically I think NES was $200, but anyway....) Going back more than 20 years the price of consoles has pretty much stayed the same. Every 5 years they were able to create a more powerful console because the technologies of the time came down in price, so they were able to create a console that was much better than the one before but at the same price. Unfortunately this generation they became greedy shitheads and doubled the price instead of doing the best they could for $300. So what's next? Is PS4 gonna cost $1200? Then PS5 will be $2400, and so on... It's rediculous.

the first playstations wasnt the same price as a nintentdo 64 was it playstation was a new format to play games on the cds or whatever instead of cartridges so dvd to blueray which is new technology only increased the price now i doubt that the price would increase to over 1000 dollars and as for your comment about being greedy i much rather pay more for top of the line gaming than have a system that the company made "the best they could for $300." that to me is rediculous

Well yeah obviously the main reason for the price is because the blu-ray drive is hella expensive. The problem is most people don't give 2 shits about blu-ray discs. I don't care about hi-def movies cause I don't have a HDTV (just bought a new 40" CRT TV for $120 and don't plan on blowing $2000 for an HDTV any time soon.) So that's kind of a waste cause I'd never buy blu-ray movies. Then I guess theoretically they might fill up the whole disc with stuff for a game but I doubt it. More likely they just get lazy and fill 40 gigs of crap that could have fit on 4 gigs if optimized. (remember some game sovi linked to before with awesome graphics taking only 70 kb or something.)

Also sure you'd rather buy something with the top of the line technology of the time, but there has to be some limits because people aren't made of money (and some are just cheapskates like me). And of course there is the law of supply and demand. You could put out the greatest system ever, but if nobody gives a shit about it because it has no good games then they aren't willing to spend crazy money for it. We see that with the shitty sales PS3 is doing. Also, if you're going to say you want absolute top of the line, well I mean what if Sony decided for PSP 2 they were going to use that new Bio screen technology that rolls flat like a scroll of paper? That would be a pretty badass high tech system, but would you pay $10,000 for it?

i knew from me saying that u were gonna say something like that haha tou-che or however u spelt it but i meant within reason mate

Well some might think blu-ray is not within reason as it is. Penetration of 1080p HDTV sets are still pretty low so not many people even benefit from the better picture. Also the raise of price for movies to $30 a pop is a ripoff too. I know a few peeps who have 1080p sets that don't give a shit and still use DVDs (Of course some also are not tech savvy enough to know DVD doesn't give hi-def picture but thats beside the point) Blu-ray and HD-DVD are fighting an uphill battle in the first place to get people to care about hi-res discs let alone pick a format. Anyway; point is I don't see blu-ray as justification for the crazy price when blu-ray is a waste at this time for most people, when they could just wait 2 years and pick up a standalone blu-ray player for $100. Not like the games are really taking advantage of the extra space in the meantime.

i would have to agree but i dont even have an hdtv period but i love my ps3 and it is just worth it to me mate i am glad they are on blu ray and it may be an uphill battle now but it will take off soon i believe. and blu ray players have already got a small cut in price i seen a sony one that was like a grand go down to 800 so ps3 prices may come down in the near future

Well hopefully it will. I just trash it now cause of the price and lack of games I like but if they lower it to $400 when MGS4 and FF13 comes out in March I'll probably buy it :D. In the meantime I'm happy with Wii playing Super Paper Mario but PS4 will be badass as well when more games come out.
