Gamespot has an article on the PS3 features.

PlayStation Network Platform
Sony only touched briefly on its online service for the PS3 at last year's E3, namely, that they're working on it, and that it will have "content, community, communication, and commerce." In March, Ken Kutaragi detailed more information about the service during Sony's PlayStation Business Briefing in Japan. Sony is working with its Sony Online Entertainment arm on the project. SOE currently manages Sony's EverQuest, Star Wars Galaxies, and PlanetSide MMO game franchises. The service doesn't have a marketing-approved name yet, but it's being called the PlayStation Network platform internally.

The network will be similar to Microsoft's Xbox Live service and will provide community features such as personal login accounts, friends lists, avatars, matchmaking, and communication options, including instant messaging, as well as voice and video chat. The free basic service will include community features and online multiplayer gameplay. Xbox Live Silver, Microsoft's free basic service, provides community options, too, but Silver-level subscribers can only play massively multiplayer games online. Players must upgrade to a paid Xbox Live Gold service subscription to access online multiplayer gameplay for non-MMO games.

Sony's service will also offer Xbox Marketplace-like download functionality, and developers will be able to integrate shops directly into games, letting players buy items from within the game experience. Sony hasn't confirmed whether or not games will be available for download, but there won't be any hardware hurdles, as the PS3 will be able to play games directly from the system's hard-disk drive. In addition to microtransactions, Sony has suggested that the commerce service can also handle subscriptions. Sony plans to let game developers connect and run their own game servers on the network. Letting game companies charge subscription fees could help defray the cost of maintaining servers.

Well point being made there is that MMO's exclusive to PC look to be heading down the dark and lonely road of PC/Console and as everyone knew or those still in denial thats why the NGE peaked its ugly head into SWG.

Well Timi in this day and age you don't need to dumb down the game to play in console. Consoles have all the peripherals the computers has available ot them. For the PS systems you get a keyboard and a mouse, as well as the controller. So you can easily control any of the MMOs out there.

I agree the hardware is there, I don't agree the game design is there. Several games that are designed for both PC and console are two completely different games. Such as the Battlefield 2 series on the PC it's a very complitcated and technical game, where as on the console (360 even) it's a very dumbed down FPS. Another FPS comparison such as a smash hit Halo is a very simplistic FPS compared to say something like Half Life.

The only MMO off the top of my head that is Console/PC is Final Fantasy XI, but that game was already dumbed down on PC because it was later headed to the PS2 and now on 360.

Again, it's not that the hardware isn't there to creat games as complex as something on PC, but the design isn't there. Consoles have mainly been and arcadish gaming experience and have a much younger demographic then PC gamers (not arguing older individuals, just the youngsters that play).

SWG is a prime example of it. They took a very complex game and dumbed it down into a twitched based MMO/Planetsidesque experience and looks to be heading full steam onto console, which was expected.

Well RPG games are not arcadish types. And most of them are in console.

I always thought FFXI came out in PS2 first, but then I checked the other day and it came out for PC and PS2 the same date :P When it came out, PS2 didn't had a keyboard yet (I think there were third party ones, but Sony didn't had it's own), so communication was made by code words integated into the game, pretty neat system. A month after, the keyboard came out and made things a lot easier. :P FFXI also has a Japanese-English translator. Is a basic one, but I thought it was a good detail, since you encounter Japanese gamers on almost every server.

But remember FFXI was out in japan on PS2 a year before it ever hit the PC in the states.

Yeah I'm talking about the Japanese version, I don't know when it came out in the States :P
