The majority of Europe is selling 60gb PS3s at 599 Euros (785 American Dollars). However, Ireland is getting a price bump to 629 Euros (825 American Dollars) due to Ireland being "traditionally more expensive than other territories." But wait, it doesn't end there. It was just announced that the European country getting fucked over the most is Greece, with a price of 659 Euros ($863 american dollars). In a country where gaming is almost non-existant (maybe a few thousand people), the Internet has only found its way in 20% of Greek households, and the average monthly salary for a Greek is around 828 Euros (1,082 American Dollars), Sony Europe has made no comment regarding this.

they banned gambling arcade games. Like, going to an arcade was overrun with kids playing slots and blackjack :)
 
This is due to tax variances throughout europe, and it only looks expensive from an American point of view because the dollar is weak. Remember we are dealing with the conversion of the dollar, and Yen with this console, and with European currencies being strong this will un doubtedly reflect in the price points.
 
If you release something valued at 80% of the average person's monthly salary, then it is a luxury good. And if the population of the country that even plays video games is small as it is, the potential of finding someone who can afford it is pretty limited. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole Xbox 360 ordeal in India reincarnated itself as the PS3 version for Greece.

Furthermore, the European PS3 is getting its backwards compatibility gimped to play LESS PS2 games than its American or Japanese counterparts

I don't think Greece is a key market, sorry to all the Greeks. Backwards compatability issues will be addressed in firmware updates, and gradually take time.
