GDC Keynote: MMOs Past, Present, and Future

Here's the transcript to a GDC keynote called MMOs: Past, Present, and Future. Raph Koster was involved with it, and so were some other major MMO heads. Quite an interesting read. The predictions oif the future I do not like, except that most of them agree that companies are spending Dumb Money to clone WoW. I especially am not fond of the MMO/Social Networking crossover that is coming our way.

I would really hate see MMOs opening up Myspace clones but tieing it ingame. :P

unfortunately, that's the next big frontier for 3rd gen MMOs. SL and MySpace will be the big shadow that will linger over them. At least thats what many big MMO devs are agreeing upon

Weird though, would it be a myspace for your character or the real you? I can see a myspace opening up for MMO characters but the real you ingame? I don't think that would work.

Its not necessarily MySpace MMO. What they're aiming at is an MMO centered around YOU....user created content, focus on the individual, VOIP, the ability to make real money. Instead of putting the spotlight on a single story or theme, they're going to put the spotlight on the actual user. That's what Areae Inc. is working on...the very first 3rd gen MMO that will combine video games, MMOs, and Web 2.0.

So wait are they making an mmo like second life? Or an MMO like SWG with content additions similar to the Sims? What do you think? I don't really grasp the whole concept here.

I don't grasp it that well either, to be honest. Everyone is keeping their info as vague as possible, cause whoever is the first to break the ice most likely will be the leader (aka, don't share trade secrets on things that will secure your market share). All anyone knows who isn't working for some of the companies making these MMOs is that it is Web 2.0 and MMO tied together. Whenever a dev is asked to elaborate, they vaguely reference Web 2.0 success stories, like MySpace and user-created content. I've been reading a lot of dev blogs and I'm honestly still not sure as to what the hell they are doing. All I know is that I'm not liking what I am seemingly understanding about it.

Well in the end they better stick to their roots and make a good game. :P Not really looking forward to the future of MMOs atm with WoW setting the bar.

WoW set the bar for popularity and subscriptions. All the WoW clones that you see....SWG:NGE, LotrO, etc are companies aiming for the big bucks instead of introducing something new or innovative. WoW proved that a certain model can be very successful in not only maintaining existing market segments, but also capturing new ones and stealing from competing ones. It's all part of the life cycle curve. To be honest, STO is probably the single most important game to me that will be coming out since SWG. I've said it before that I'm getting a really good vibe from that game, one I haven't gotten since SWG. But I've been wrong many times before, might be a false hope or false alarm, even though the most recent MMORPG preview of STO at GDC confirmed my hopes.

Well if WoW is so successful then howcome I hate it? Am I an MMO freak or something? Hehe. STO sounds really intresting to me but I'm afraid if I play it I will become the Uber Nerd 3000. :P

For the same reasons so many people love any form of Reality TV and I hate it. Personal taste and preference. Besides, only 0.001241054% of the global population has even tried WoW :P

Waiting for the Miyamoto keynote to start, I’m sitting three rows from the front. Close enough to see Nintendo’s resident BMOC, Reggie Fils-Aime at the front of the crowd, working it with his trademark smile and good will. He poses for pictures, he signs Wiimotes, he presses the flesh with a good natured ease that would make even the most seasoned politician weep with envy.

“Kick his ass and take his name!” someone shouted from a few rows behind me.

“Who?” answered Reggie in mid-autograph.

“Phil Harrison, front row!” Sure enough, there was Phil Harrison, seated dead center, front row. Looks like he could show up on time for Nintendo’s keynote, but not Sony’s.

With a grin and a chuckle, Reggie replies, “Some would say we’ve already done that.”

Touchdown. The crowd goes wild.

The only good Key note today was Phil Harrison's of Sony, and his presentation on Game 3.0.

Read it, and Xbox Live users prepare to buy a PS3. [/b]
Actually, the best was when Maxis's Spore developer Chris Hecker goes on stage and calls the Wii "a piece of shit" and then is later made to go back on stage and apologize lol

But by far the coolest thing at GDC was not Game 3.0....rather, a game for Game 3.0 called LittleBig Planet. The possibilities in it are endless, and by far it is the most fun game ever created. Sorry Wii, but sony gets the checkmate with this game:

and here's an example of a video of a level created in LBP

It all boils down to market experience.

Wow I'm in awe of this game. I can't wait for this to come out, this could keep 3 friends and I busy for hours =)

Pretty sick. Too bad I refuse to buy a PS3 because SONY IS EVIL!!! lol
[/b]

There is no way Sony is as far as Microshaft on the evil scale. I class Sony as a very forward looking business, and a lot more ethical than Microshaft.

Well if a company with the name Mircosoft in it destroyed SWG then I would hate Microsoft. :P Fair enough?
