The first independent data on Blu-ray and HD-DVD disc sales has found that Blu-ray is outselling its rival by a factor of more than two to one.

Figures gathered by Nielsen VideoScan show that for every 47.14 HD-DVDs discs sold in the first week of January, 100 Blu-ray discs were sold. By the second week in January the HD-DVD figure had fallen to 38.36.

The most popular film with the Blu-ray camp is Crank, a thriller with Jason Statham playing an assassin who is poisoned and must keep his heart rate up to stay alive.

HD-DVD buyers are more tempted by Batman Begins and Mission Impossible III.

Banana....are you still spouting off the success of the PS3 paper weight? Was just watching Attack of the Show on G4 last night in which they did a segment on how much of a miserable failure the PS3 has been. Just wanted to know how things at the 'ol Sony homestead have been going lately.

Just kind of funny that since a week after xmas I can walk into any game/electronics store and find stacks of PS3's and still haven't seen a single Wii on store shelves.....

G4 is the most worthless source of game propaganda.

And this isn't about the PS3, this is about Blu-Ray. I read about this on Kotaku the other day. Although it still is way too early to say which will win, there's entering competition from multi-format players AND multi-format DVDs, so those are the monkey wrench in the market.

I will not buy either one HD or Blu-ray until 5th gen. And I agree with Stav, the multi-format dvds and players are likely to make neither one dominant.

Sidenote:
The reason betamax was beat by vhs was porn. Video tape was the only place that you could get a porn movie. Now most people get it from the internet so I don't really see this being a factor in which format wins.

Well it's about the PS3, as PS3 buyers undoubtedly swelled the Blu-Ray sales for January. Whether or not it's a continuing trend is the real issue.

You mean VHS is doooomed?!?! :o

That's like saying that Alan Wake sales are entirely proportional to Vista sales because Alan Wake buyers undoubtedly will swell Vista sales for February

Probably the best new game out there. Think of it as the successor to Max Payne

Yeah not my cup of tea

Never said "it must be true since it was on G4" it was a debate session that included Dan Hsu (sp?) the editor in chief for EGM which is a definitive authority in gaming journalism. He didn't have too many positive things to say about the machine.

Maybe I shouldn't have brought up the PS3 in a thread about blue ray/HD-DVD.....but just haven't been on the boards for a while and was wondering if the bananaman PS3 propaganda was still rolling as strong as it was pre-PS3 release.

Maybe its just my opinion but the PS3 has got a lot of catching up to do.....Wii and 360 are WAY out in front in this current gen console war. Discuss amongst yourselves *church lady voice*

Er, well, Blu-ray isn't PS3-exclusive. The PS3 swelled the numbers. How much? Don't know. Continuing trend or launch anomaly? Don't know. The PS3 was dumped on the market, and I'm sure lots of HD junkies picked up a Blu-ray disc or two, you know, just because they could. There are more PS3s in homes right now than stand-alone Blu-ray and HD-DVD players combined.

FWIW, I don't care which format (if any) wins. I'm at least a couple of years away from caring, and I'll pick up the winner whether its Blu-ray, HD-DVD, or a combo.
