Buddy

just look at their profile, there should be a button on the top that says "Add ___ to your buddy list." Or, if you are reading a thread you can just click on their name and chose that option from the dropdown menu
 
Yeah, it's a main feature in vB, and it existed in the old IPB board as well. it was hidden in the User CP and the Quick Links buttons though
 
So what are the benefits of being a buddy?

None, really. You just get to see them online and you can quickly PM them from the little Buddy List block. It's more useful for forums that have hundreds, even thousands of users online all at once, so you can see if certain people are online or not. Since that isn't the case here, you can always just look atht eh "Whos Online" list
